What does a functional communication profile assess? The purpose of the Functional Communication Profile is to provide a comprehensive inventory of an individuals communication abilities, their mode of communication (ex: nonverbal, verbal, sign, augmentative), and their degree of independence.
PECS is often frowned upon in the SLP world because there is a very rigid teaching hierarchy and requires the individual to pull off an icon and hand it to the communication partner to communicate, sometimes moving across the room/environment to hand it to the person.
PECS is a type of Augmentative and Alternative Communication that uses visual symbols to teach the learner to communicate with parents, carers, teachers and peers. The aim is to teach intentional, functional communication and to allow users to communicate their wants and needs.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is based on applied behavior analysis (ABA), and is used to facilitate the development of functional communication skills in children who are not using speech to communicate.
PECS consists of six phases and begins by teaching an individual to give a single picture of a desired item or action to a communicative partner who immediately honors the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences.

People also ask

PECS focuses on communication that is relevant and motivating. Learners are taught to exchange pictures for things they want. For example, if they want a toy they will give that picture to another person who will then give them a toy. PECS teaches learners to initiate, as spontaneous communication is the goal.
The child learns to respond to questions from others using pictures. They will also learn how to make spontaneous comments using pictures. For example, a child may put a picture of a dog on the table to tell others that he saw a dog outside. The child begins using text along with pictures to form sentences.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a way for autistic people to communicate without relying on speech. To communicate, people use cards with pictures, symbols, words or photographs to ask for things, comment on things or answer questions. PECS is an augmentative and alternative communication system.
