At its core, the 4-3-3 formation is built around a simple yet effective structure. The team is organized into four defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards. Each group of players has specific roles and responsibilities, which, when executed well, create a strong and cohesive team.
In 1986, Carlos Billardo of Argentina and Franz Beckenbauer of West Germany came up with a new formation, namely 3-5-2, which was quickly accepted by most experts all around the world. Using the advantages of the system, they led their teams to the final matches of WIC 86 and WIC 90 respectively.
The key difference, as compared to traditional arrangements, is that the 3-5-2 formation does not have a libero. The defense block comprises three players, each mapped to a designated opponent. The midfield is made up of a block of another five players, with the wingers being the active attackers.
The 3-5-2 is a good option for coaches who want to put their opponent under pressure early (pressing in the attacking third or direct attacks on the opposing defenders through the wide midfielders). When pressing in midfield the team can defend towards the center to take advantage of the compactness there.
For most Rec teams, a formation with Depth (like a 2-1-3-1) will work better than a typical formation that has more width (like a 3-2-2 or a 3-3-1).
