CalOSBA administers grant programs for small businesses, non-profits, and eligible community organizations that support and promote entrepreneurship. CalOSBA-administered programs can also be located through the California Grants Portal.
The Small Business Innovation Grant (SBIG) is a competitive funding program designed to empower Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in accelerating the development and commercialization of innovative technologies, products, and processes.
To receive an SBIR or STTR award, the proposer must qualify as a Small Business Concern (SBC), as defined by 13 C.F.R. 701-705, at time of award. Eligible SBCs must meet the following criteria: Organized for profit, with a place of business located in the United States.
There are no federal grants for starting a business. But small business owners can get money in different ways. This includes using personal funds, finding investors, or taking out loans.
Not to harp on it too much, but we recommend only pursuing SBIRs that align with your companys long term strategic goals. Focus on topics where you can see the commercialization benefit and would be willing to invest in that opportunity after the SBIR investment helped advance the technology.
