The Rage of Achilles Homer tells his reader that Achilles rage starts with an argument he has with Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, over the kings choice of war prize. Agamemnon had taken a woman named Chryseis as his war prize, and the god Apollo was pretty mad about this considering Chryseis was a priestess of his.
Agamemnon calls two heralds and tells them to go to Achilles camp and take away Briseis. When they arrive, Achilles welcomes them and lets the heralds take Briseis away without a fight.
The events of the Iliad open with the rage of Achilles. He is angry with Agamemnon because Agamemnon took Achilles concubine, a war prize, from him. This event caused Achilles to refuse to fight in the war against the Trojans.
Achilles has anger issues. The great Greek warrior sits out most of the Trojan War because hes angrily sulking. When he finally enters battle, he does so in a fit of rage that causes him to commit atrocities and bring dishonor on himself.
Angry at the dishonour of having his plunder and glory taken away (and, as he says later, because he loves Briseis), with the urging of his mother Thetis, Achilles refuses to fight or lead his troops alongside the other Greek forces.
