Unlike Form 990 (link to B6) which is NOT used to calculate taxes owed by the organization, IRS Form 990-T is a separate tax form that must be filed by tax-exempt organizations that have certain types of unrelated business income and is used to calculate and report tax owed.
Tax-exempt organizations must file a tax return called a Form 990 with the IRS each year to comply with federal regulations. There are several versions of Form 990: public charities file a Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N; private foundations file Form 990-PF (PF stands for Private Foundation).
When Does a Nonprofit Need to File Form 990-T? Your organization must file Form 990-T if it has: $1,000 or more in gross income from unrelated business activities during the year. Even if you had losses, filing allows you to carry them forward to offset future unrelated income.
Deferred tax assets are caused by the early payment or overpayment of taxes. Several situations can lead to their creation: Business expenses that are accounted for in the income statement prior to being accounted for on the tax statement. Capital losses that are recorded as tax write-offs and then carried forward.
If the net equity decreases during the tax year, taking into consideration the current years reinvested net after tax ECI, the net decrease deemed to have been repatriated is subjected to the branch profit tax.
