Questacon inspires all Australians, but particularly our school children, and plays a vital role in encouraging them along that journey. Questacons much-loved place in the national imagination demonstrates the enduring power of science and its power to inspire curiosity.
Questacon was founded by ANU Professor Mike Gore AM, whose great love of teaching both students and the general public inspired him to develop Australias first interactive science centre, based on the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
Professor Mike Gore AO (19342022) was the founder of Questacon and its Director from 1988 to 1999. In 1995, he established the ANUs National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, where he was Adjunct Professor.
The Questacon building is a Canberra icon, but designing this world-first was no simple feat. In 1985, a call for submissions to design a new building for a proposed National Science and Technology Centre for Canberra, caught the eye of young architect Lawrence Nield.
