NJ Early Intervention Systems program ends when a child turns three. Time and planning is needed to prepare children and families for changes in systems and services. During this time the Early Intervention Providers will provide information and assist families in the transition process.
To be eligible, a child must demonstrate measured delays in development of at least 2.0 standard deviations below the mean in one developmental area; or 1.5 standard deviations below the mean in two or more of the developmental areas.
Children aged birth to three with certain levels of developmental delay or established conditions, and their families, are eligible for the ITP. No family is denied services because of the inability to pay.
Early intervention should begin any time shortly after birth and usually should continue until the child docHubes age three. An amendment to IDEA in 2004 allows states to have early intervention programs that may continue until the child enters, or is eligible to enter, kindergarten.
When children cant express themselves or experience other communication, cognitive, or motor/physical challenges, tantrums and other problematic behaviors are more likely to occur. EI can help decrease these stressful situations and teach children to use positive behaviors to meet their needs.
