Minor or Cognate Minors and cognates are intended to develop a coherent basic preparation in a second area of study. The difference between a minor and a cognate is that minors are a more prescribed plan of study while cognate course selection is more flexible.
This is the principle behind our Cognates Program of General Education. A cognate is a set of at least three related courses, and students take one cognate in each of the three areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, People and Society, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Cognates are electives with a purpose that are chosen in consultation with the student advisor and are designed to enhance the depth of understanding in the focus area of the EBP project or support the career and professional goals of the student.
A cognate is a coherent set of courses in a discipline or interdisciplinary grouping aimed at enhancing career-oriented skills in high demand in the employment market. A cognate will typically consist of 12 or more credits with C or better and a 2.00 grade-point average in courses in the cognate.
Each Beyond the USA cognate requires a minimum of 9 credits to complete. At least one course per cognate must be a Study Abroad Course.
