In the early 1800s, settlers began building log cabins in what is now known as Cleveland Heights. Streetcar lines spurred large-scale residential development at the beginning of the 20th century. The population grew rapidly enough to earn the once-small hamlet the status of a city on August 9, 1921.
Named after General Moses Cleaveland, the City of Cleveland was incorporated in 1836. Aided by its proximity to rail and water routes and natural resources like iron and oil, the City of Cleveland served as a central hub for industrial growth, commerce, and trade throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Preyer House Legend has it that it was built with Native American labor. The Preyer House, now a Cleveland Heights Landmark is the oldest standing building in the city.
From our beginnings in a single room with fewer than 6,000 books in 1869 to todays Main Library campus and 27 branches (and beyond) with millions of books and other resources, Cleveland Public Library has come a long way.
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS began as a hamlet in 1901, was incorporated as a village in 1903, and became a city in 1921. Six miles east of downtown, it comprises eight square miles, bounded on the west by Cleveland, north by EAST CLEVELAND, east by SOUTH EUCLID and UNIVERSITY.
