Partnerships file an information return to report their income, gains, losses, deductions, credits, etc. A partnership does not pay tax on its income but passes through any profits or losses to its partners. Partners must include partnership items on their tax or information returns.
Schedule K-1 is a schedule of IRS Form 1065, U.S. Return of Partnership Income. Its provided to partners in a business partnership to report their share of a partnerships profits, losses, deductions and credits to the IRS.
K-1s are provided to the IRS with the partnerships tax return and also to each partner so that they can add the information to their own tax returns. For example, if a business earns $100,000 of taxable income and has four equal partners, each partner should receive a K-1 with $25,000 of income on it.
4 A K-1 shows what each partners share of the returns is based on the amount of capital they have in the partnership. A partners basis is increased by capital contributions and their share of income, while it is reduced by a partners share of losses and any withdrawals.
The partnership uses line 11a, column (d), to report portfolio income other than interest, dividend, royalty, and capital gain (loss) income. The partnership should attach a schedule to Schedule K-1 (565) to tell you what kind of portfolio income is reported on line 11a, column (d).
