When Can RCL Be Authorized? Illness or Medical Condition Up to 12 months with medical documentation. Academic Difficulties For initial academic struggles, with a minimum six-credit load. Final Term If the student can complete their program with fewer courses.
A reduced course load may impact your financial assistance. This may include but is not limited to outside scholarship requirements, grants, financial aid, and program requirements. This should be discussed with a financial aid advisor before registering with a reduced course load.
If you are an international student and hold an active Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), you may be eligible to apply for a Reduced Study Load. If you are approved under specific criteria, a Reduced Study Load allows you to study less than 50 points in a half-year period (January to June or July to December).
If your total credits drop below full-time enrollment, and you have not received authorization for Reduced Course Load (RCL) from an international student advisor, you will fall out of F-1 immigration status. Your F-1 status would be at risk of termination and you would be expected to depart the U.S.
Academic RCL is only approved for one term per degree level, is typically only granted in the first quarter of attendance, and requires enrollment in at least half the credits required for full-time. Students who have been granted Academic RCL remain eligible for future RCLs for medical reasons and/or the final term.

A Medical Reduced Course Load permits F-1 and J-1 students to reduce their course load below full-time (or, if necessary, not enroll in any courses) due to a students temporary illness or medical condition. A maximum of 12 months of Medical Reduced Course Load is possible per degree level.
Absolutely you should take a reduced course load. Youll learn better, for one, if youre not running around between so many classes all the time.
