--No truck, truck tractor or trailer shall be registered at less than the total of the weight of the unladen vehicle, the maximum weight of the proposed load, the equivalent weight of the fuel capacity, 150 pounds times the seating capacity, and the weight of any permanently or temporarily attached appurtenances.

Declared Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (CGW): The total unladen weight of the combination of vehicles plus the heaviest load that will be transported by that combination of vehicles. (Vehicles that pull another vehicle.) A. REGISTERED OWNER OR LESSEE INFORMATION.

Can the GVW of a truck be changed?

Answer: Yes, you can certify the vehicle. The GVWR and GAWRs provided by the incomplete vehicle manufacturer can be changed by a final-stage manufacturer or alterer. However, if the ratings are changed, there must be some analysis, testing or documentation to back-up the re-rating.

How to legally decrease GVWR on truck?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not have any regulations or provisions for recertifying a vehicle and, therefore, may not recognize any GVWR changes. However, companies that re-rate the GVWR of a used vehicle may face serious liability concerns.

Guidance: Yes. The motor carriers intent to increase the weight rating is shown by the structural modifications. When the vehicle is used to perform functions normally performed by a vehicle with a higher GVWR, 390.33 allows an enforcement officer to treat the actual gross weight as the GVWR of the modified vehicle.
