An anatomical gift is a donation of all or part of a human body, after death, for the purpose of transplantation, therapy, research, or education.
To meet the medical professons growing demand for cadavers, Massachusetts enacted the first anatomy law. This measure, passed in 1831, made the bodies of the unclaimed poor available for dissection in medical schools and hospitals.
Meals, entertainment event tickets, golf, gift baskets, and payment of travel expenses can all be illegal gifts if given in connection with official action or position, as can anything worth $50 or more. A number of smaller gifts together worth $50 or more may also violate these sections.
In accordance with the Massachusetts Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, an individual may arrange for the donation of their remains by executing the Instrument of Anatomical Gift (the Instrument), as well as the HIPAA Authorization Form (Attachment A to the Instrument) and the Donor Data Sheet (Attachment B to the
(3) Anatomical gift means a donation of all or part of a human body to take effect after the donors death for the purpose of transplantation, therapy, research, or education. (4) Decedent means a deceased individual whose body or part is or may be the source of an anatomical gift.
