Aspiring brick masons are required to follow an Eight Stage program in order to become certified. This program typically includes approximately 432 hours of classroom and lab work and a minimum of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training with your sponsoring employer .

Brick masons receive most of their training during a mandatory three- to four-year apprenticeship program. Technical and community colleges, masonry unions and professional builders and masons associations typically offer these programs.
Masons typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and learn the trade either through an apprenticeship or on the job.
The exam consists of 110 multiple choice questions and a score of 70% or higher is required to pass. Roughly 60% of the exam questions relate to the provisions of the Minnesota Residential Building Code and the rest relate to the statutes and rules governing the various aspects of the residential construction industry.
