Under the California Act, a “petition” to correct or vacate the arbitration award must be “filed” with the Court and “served” on the other party to the Award within 100 days after the Award is served on the parties.
The proper method for seeking to enforce an arbitration award under the Federal Act is to file a motion for confirmation in the appropriate court. That court must grant the motion and enter judgment on the confirmation order unless the opposing party files a timely motion to vacate, modify, or correct the award.
Typically, an arbitration award can be overturned only as a result of corruption, fraud, partiality, or prejudicial misconduct by the arbitrator.
Once an arbitral award is confirmed, the judgment is docketed, which means that it has the same force and effect as any other civil judgment. In most cases, arbitration awards are confirmed and entered as judgments without adverse party opposition.
However, arbitration awards often need to be enforced and enforcement can come only through the court system. To get the ball rolling on enforcement through the court system, the winner of the arbitration hearing needs to “confirm” the judgment in court.

Parties may return to the arbitrator for clarification of an award based on their agreement or the arbitrator's retained jurisdiction. However, if a party (ordinarily the employer) refuses to comply with an award, the party seeking enforcement may go into court to obtain an appropriate order.
Contractual arbitration. This petition requests the court to confirm, correct, or vacate an award in an arbitration conducted according to an agreement between the parties that is subject to Code of Civil Procedure section 1285 et seq.
If arbitration is ineffective and non-binding, any party or parties are at liberty to appeal this award without requiring any reasonable ground to appeal. But if the Arbitration is binding, then the party or the parties need a concrete reason to challenge the award in court, just as in the case of jury award.
The losing party in the arbitration may oppose the winner's petition for confirmation and/or bring a separate action to set aside ("vacate") the award.
Decisions indicate that a court may review an arbitrator's award if it appears that the arbitrator substituted his judgment for that of the parties, the award does not draw its essence from the contract, the award contains material error, and the award is against public law or policy.
