Marriages and civil unions are performed in Chicago and all of the suburban municipal district courthouses. A valid marriage or civil union license and a $10 administrative fee are required. Couples must obtain a marriage or civil union license at least one (1) day, but no longer than 60 days, prior to the ceremony.
The marriage must then be solemnized by a judge, a retired judge or by an ordained person in good standing with his or her religious denomination. There are no requirements for an ordained person to register in the County or the State of Illinois in order to marry people, nor does the County or State keep track of
Couples must: be 18 years of age or older. not be blood relatives. Individuals who reside out of state may not apply for a marriage license in Illinois if such a marriage would not be legal in their home state.
After applying for an Illinois marriage license at the county clerks office where the wedding is taking place, it will be issued to you immediately. There are no waiting periods and the license is valid for up to 60 days and takes effect the day after it was issued.
The Division of Vital Records can verify the facts of a marriage that has taken place from 1962 through the current index date available. The facts of a marriage include: names, dates of birth, date of event, and city/county of event. Verifications cost $5 and can be requested by mail, by fax, or in person.
