The first residents in our region are the ancestors of what is now known as the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. Their presence dates back thousands of years to when the tribe was known as Anishnaabek. Their language still exists today and about 4% of the countys population is comprised of American Indians.
They are one of the Anishinaabeg, related to but distinct from the Ojibwe and Potawatomi peoples. After migrating from the East Coast in ancient times, they settled on Manitoulin Island, near the northern shores of Lake Huron, and the Bruce Peninsula in the present-day province of Ontario, Canada.
Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) The Little Travers Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB), traditionally known as the Waganakising Odawak, is a federally recognized Indian tribe. The tribes ancestral homelands are the Upper Great Lakes, with the heart being Waganakising (Land of the Crooked Tree).
The Chippewa, also known as the Ojibway or Ojibwe (said to mean the puckered moccasin people), live mainly in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Ontario. They speak a form of the Algonquian language and are closely related to the Ottawa and Potawatomi.
The Ojibwe were the Keepers of the Medicine. They were entrusted with the sacred scrolls and teachings of the Grand Medicine Society. The Odawa were the Keepers of the Trade. They protected the trade network controlled by the Neshnabek.
