Step 1: Complete CG-1280 Vessel Renewal Notification form mailed to you. Sign, date, indicate capacity of person signing and address change, if applicable OR click the CG-1280 Renewal of Certificate of Documentation link under the INSTRUCTIONS AND FORMS tab on our website to complete form.
A Certificate of Documentation is valid for 1-5 years from the date of issue, and must be renewed on an annual basis unless the multi-year renewal fees are submitted.
The new five-year documentation cost for is fixed at $130. Additional fees apply for initial documentation as well as exchanges. The Coast Guard will not issue refunds if an owner chooses to cancel documentation before its five-year expiration or if a vessel is sold during the renewal period.
All documents are issued by the US Coast Guard and must be renewed annually. The Coast Guard will mail a renewal notice to the owner of a documented vessel 45 days prior to the expiration of the document. When the renewal notice is completed and returned to the Coast Guard, a color renewal decal is sent to the owner.

Boat owners can document their vessel or renew their Certificate of Documentation directly through the Coast Guard's National Vessel Documentation Center. Owners will generally need to submit: An application for documentation (form CG-1258)
If your vessel is USCG documented, you would only need to submit a copy of the Certificate of Documentation. It has to include the signature of the owners, and the copy must be notarized. Then, state the new name and address of the new owners.
Log on to the Office of Science and Technology's copy of the Coast Guard's database of all boats by name if the boat is registered with the help of the Coast Guard. When the site asks for the ship's name and port of call, you may get the contact information and name of the registered owner.
A certificate of documentation will be issued by the Coast Guard to the registered owner upon successful processing of an application. It is valid for one year and must be renewed, although there are multi-year renewals available for recreational-only vessels. Documentation must be carried on the vessel at all times.
