JROTC cadets who participate in rifle marksmanship training are eligible to earn a JROTC Rifle Qualification Badge, representative of one of three qualification levels (in ascending order): Marksman, Sharpshooter, and Expert.
The type of rifle marksmanship taught and practiced in the JROTC program is a three-position air rifle shooting done with 4.5 mm (. 177 cal.) air rifles with the targets placed at a distance of 10 meters. Target rifle shooting involves firing in three different positions: standing, kneeling, and prone.
The four fundamentals of marksmanship include steady position, aiming, breath control, and trigger squeeze. Steady position relates to selecting a stance, position, and grip that creates a stable firing platform. Prone position, kneeling, and standing are a few common positions used by hunters and military personnel.
1 is for personnel and administration, 2 is for intelligence, 3 is for operations (to include planning and training), and 4 is for supply/logistics. It follows that the S-1 would be the personnel officer, the S-2 the logistics officer, the S-3 the operations officer, the S-4 the supply or logistics officer.
The U.S. Army Marksmanship Units Service Pistol Team trained more than 250 Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade at Fort Benning. By qualifying on the M17 pistol, these Soldiers are sharpening fundamentals, increasing lethality, and building the confidence needed to fight and win.
