In Texas, there are over 900 MUDs, with many of them located outside the city borders in extraterritorial jurisdictions (ETJ) where municipal services are not offered. A MUD is owned by the community it serves.
Texas Water Districts and Authorities (WDs) are local governmental entities that provide limited water-related services to customers and residents. WDs can be created by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, a county commissioners court, or the legislature. WDs issue both tax-supported and revenue debt.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is the environmental agency for the state. We have approximately 2,800 employees, located in our central office in Austin and 16 regional offices around Texas.
At TCEQ, the Water Supply Division oversees the agencys drinking water program and has the responsibility for overseeing more than 7,000 public water systems that provide drinking water to approximately 29 million Texans.
