Kente cloth is a hand woven cloth designed to reflect the history, ethics, religious beliefs, and many other aspects of Asante culture in Ghana, Africa.
Since at least the 1970s, African American graduates -particularly university graduates- wear a kente cloth stole over their graduation robes. The kente cloth stole represents the graduates pride in their restored Afrikan heritage, and their pride in their accomplishment of graduating.
Each color has several meanings, for example: black is maturity/passing rites, gold is prosperity, green is growth/renewal and maroon is healing. Stoles are a popular addition to honor your students for their achievements and good grades at your graduation ceremony.
Kente cloth has its origin in the Ashanti kingdom, and was adopted by people in Ivory Coast and many other West African countries. The origin of kente is in the Akan empire of Bonoman. Most Akans migrated out of the area that was Bonoman to create various states.
Each Kente pattern was unique and had its own name. Weavers used vibrant colors and complex designs to portray the cloths profound philosophical meaning. Kente cloths came to represent the history, philosophy, ethics, and moral values of Ghanaian culture.
