Tradition 4 of the 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous states that the freedom individual groups have carried with it the admonition to protect the fellowship as a whole. This means that meeting formats can vary from group to group, but it also cautions against straying too far from the usual program.
The three obstacles include Discussion of Religion, Gossip, and Dominance (which includes giving advice and cross-talk). With regard to avoiding discussions of religion, Al-Anon is not allied with any sect or denomination. It is a spiritual program, based on no particular form of religion (p. 21).
In Al-Anon We Learn: not to suffer because of the actions or reactions of other. not to allow ourselves to be used or abused by others in. not to do for others what they could do for themselves; not to manipulate situations so others will eat, go to bed, not to cover up for anyones mistakes or misdeeds;
We do have 4 Ms in Al-Anon. Theyre a bit different, but also not hugely helpful in our recovery. The 4 Ms Im talking about are MOTHERING, MANAGING, MANIPULATING AND MARTYRDOM. Things we try and avoid in Al- Anon.
