Just two years after being renamed Fort Cavazos, the U.S. Army base in Central Texas has reverted to its original name Fort Hood.
In order to enter, all occupants 18 years or older must have a valid identification. DOD affiliated or Federal Government ID card holders may enter Fort Hood using any lane at any ACP. All visitors and non-DOD card holders must visit the Marvin Leath Visitor Welcome Center located on T.J. Mills Blvd.
Fort Hood was originally redesignated Fort Cavazos on May 9, 2023, in honor of the late retired Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, who served as a III Corps commanding general between 1980 and 1982, as part of a congressionally mandated effort to rename nine Army installations named for Confederate soldiers.
Originally named after Confederate general (and Episcopal Bishop) Leonidas Polk, Fort Polk became Fort Johnson during a re-designation ceremony on June 13, 2023 in honor of Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a World War I Medal of Honor recipient from North Carolina who served in the 369th U.S. Infantry Regiment.
