The tsunami also claimed the lives of over 8,000 people in Thailand, including many who remain missing, leaving a deep scar on the nations history. Nearly 400 bodies remain unclaimed.
On Dec. 26, 2004, more than 230,000 people lost their lives in the deadliest tsunami in history. The lack of any warning system or proper education was evident as people were caught by surprise when tsunami waves flooded coastlines around the Indian Ocean basin.
More than 160,000 people died, about 5% of the population. Those who survived lost their homes, businesses and loved ones.
Why wasnt there a warning system? In the case of tsunamis caused by earthquakes, the shaking earth can act as a warning but its much trickier to anticipate tsunamis from volcanic eruptions.
Tilly Smith (born 1994) is a British woman who, as a child, was credited with saving the lives of approximately 100 beachgoers at Mai Khao Beach in Thailand by warning them minutes before the arrival of the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

People also ask

There were no tsunami warning systems in the Indian Ocean to detect tsunamis or to warn the general population living around the ocean. Tsunami detection is difficult because while a tsunami is in deep water, it has little height and a network of sensors is needed to detect it.
Predicting exactly when such an event will happen is impossible, but few have come closer than Phil Cummins. He has been described as the person who essentially predicted the 2004 tsunami.
