Voltage transformers (VT), also called potential transformers (PT), are a parallel-connected type of instrument transformer. They are designed to present a negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering.
CTs are designed to provide an isolated current proportional to the high-voltage primary current, facilitating safe measurement and monitoring. VTs similarly reduce the primary high voltage to a lower value, allowing accurate voltage measurement for metering and control.
Voltage Transformers (VT): A voltage transformer, also known as a potential transformer (PT), is primarily designed to reduce high voltage values to lower, standardized secondary voltages, typically around 100V or lower.
The VT converts the higher primary voltage (V1) to a standardized low secondary voltage (V2), typically 100V or 110V maximum (according to prevalent IEC or IEEE standards today). The secondary voltage is then utilized by instruments for purposes such as metering, monitoring, and protection through relays.
Generally, when measuring high voltage and high current transformer signals, you use a VT (voltage transformer) and CT (current transformer). The ratios between the primary and secondary rated voltages and rated currents are the VT and CT ratios.
