Each student or group of students is evaluated by one judge and rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. Students or groups that earn a rating of 1 (or Superior) are qualified for State Solo Ensemble Festival which is held in March.
Solo Ensemble (or Solo-Ensemble) is a yearly opportunity for kids in music programs to perform a solo, duet, and/or a small ensemble piece and get some feedback from a judge. This feedback includes a rating and if its really high, they can go on to perform at state and receive another critique.
In a solo performance it is the job of the accompanist to respond to the needs of the soloist; in an ensemble performance the performers are equal partners. Therefore, somebody who wanted to play a solo with piano accompaniment as an ensemble would not be demonstrating a different skill from their solo performance.
Rating II: An exceptional performance in many respects but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in performance or to ineffective interpretation- a grade of 21-26: EXCELLENT.
Solo Ensemble provides you with the experience of working up a piece of music by yourself, with your private teacher and/or with a small group of ensemble members in order to enhance your musical skills.

Solo and ensemble festivals require students to be responsible for their own parts, which rarely occurs in large concert ensembles. They cannot hide in a trio, when they are the only one assigned to that particular part. Ensembles teach teamwork in that each member has a responsibility to the other ensemble members.
