The federal district courts are the trial courts in the federal court system. California has four federal district courts, which are the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of California.
Within limits set by Congress and the Constitution, district courts have jurisdiction to hear nearly all categories of federal civil and criminal cases. The vast majority of civil and criminal cases are filed in state courts. Sometimes a case can be filed under similar statutes in either state or federal court.
More specifically, federal courts hear criminal, civil, and bankruptcy cases. And once a case is decided, it can often be appealed.
This form, approved by the Judicial Conference of the United States in September 1974, is required for the use of the Clerk of Court for the purpose of initiating the civil docket sheet. Consequently, a civil cover sheet is submitted to the Clerk of Court for each civil complaint filed.
(a) Cover sheet required If the plaintiff indicates on the cover sheet that the case is complex under rule 3.400 et seq., or a collections case under rule 3.740, the plaintiff must serve a copy of the cover sheet with the complaint. In all other cases, the plaintiff is not required to serve the cover sheet.
