The bad news: Getting into math grad school is a lot harder than getting into college. Example: This year NYU-Courant (an excellent but not top-ranked place except in applied math) had 330 applications for 8 spots. Of course, they admitted more than 8, but you get the idea.
Applicants should have a bachelors degree or its equivalent from a four-year accredited university with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in subject related courses. There is no minimum GRE score, but students must demonstrate proficiency in quantitative skills and reasoning.
A great statement of purpose: Connects your scholarly passions to your personal motivations for taking on the work (this can take many forms). Shows an awareness of your field, but can also be understood by people outside your field.
Every year, we receive about 300 applications. Admission is extremely competitive; we admit an incoming cohort of 20 students each year.
Our program, which has approximately 100 doctoral students, is highly regarded and competitive. We admit close to 15 to 18 students (about 15% of applicants) annually and offer financial support in the form of Graduate Center Fellowships or Tuition Fellowships.
