The RSC ensures the safe use of all radioactive materials and sources of radiation throughout NIH and NIH-occupied buildings​.
To establish a quorum and to conduct business, at least one-half of the Committees membership must be present including the Radiation Safety Officer or designee and the management representative.

Use shielding for radiation sources (i.e., placing an appropriate shield between source(s) of radiation and workers).
1. The Radiation Safety Committee shall meet as often as necessary to conduct its business, but not less than once in each calendar quarter. 2. A quorum shall consist of at least one-half of the Committees membership, including the Radiation Safety Officer and the management representative.
Functions of the Radiation Safety Committee: To establish a program to ensure that all persons whose duties may require them to work in or frequent areas where radioactive materials are used are appropriately instructed as required by the regulations. These include nursing, security, and housekeeping.
