There are two main approaches to choir formation: all singers in the same part stand (or sit) together in one group or section (the traditional way) singers from each part are scattered throughout the choir as individuals or small groups (the mixed approach)
Alto is considered an inner voice in a choir, because it stays between the really high (Soprano) and the really low (Bass) parts. Altos have voices that could be described as strong, pleasant, easy, although nothing can be more difficult than singing alto sometimes.
The standard formation for classical choirs is from high to low. The highest soprano is standing on the far left and the lowest bass on the far right: This formation is convenient in a lot of ways. It is easy to remember and the conductor will find the voice groups without effort.
You will generally get a good result if you aim for sitting about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way back from the stage, and towards the middle rather than off to the side. That lets you hear a good balanced and blended sound, while being close enough to feel engaged with the performers.
The four main voices are typically labelled as soprano (or treble and countertenor), alto (contralto, countertenor or mezzo), tenor, and bass. Because the human voice has a limited range, different voice types are usually not able to sing pitches that lie outside of their specific range.

Sectional formations tend to create the most uniform sound within each section. Mixed arrangements encourage the most homogenous sound in the entire choir. More unique placements can be created to fit certain pieces. Where singers stand in relation to each other greatly affects the sound of sections and full choirs.
To sum up, there are four main types of choirs; classical choirs, contemporary choirs, gospel choirs and a cappella choirs. Each type requires different levels of commitment and skill but all offer an enjoyable way to make music with other people.
