There are four main types of reading assessments that are used in schools: Screening, Diagnostic, Progress Monitoring, Summative. Screening assessments are typically administered to all students at the beginning, middle and end of the year to identify students who might be at risk for reading difficulty.
Examples of standardized diagnostic reading assessments include: Curriculum-Based-Measurements such as the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) which assesses phonemic awareness, alphabetical principles and phonics, oral reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
The main focus is on the areas of fluency, how fast or slow a child reads aloud, how well the child understands the meaning of what is being read, and accuracy. This level assesses the students understanding of the alphabet.
