The Spanish word calaveras means skulls. The river was said to have been named by Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga in 1806 when he found many skulls of Native Americans along its banks. He believed they had either died of famine or been killed in tribal conflicts over hunting and fishing grounds.
The county takes its name from the San Joaquin River. In the early 1800s Lieutenant Moraga, commanding an expedition in the lower great Central Valley of California, gave the name of San Joaquin (meaning Saint Joachim) to a rivulet that springs from the Sierra Nevada mountains and empties into Buena Vista Lake.
In Juan Bautista De Anzas expedition to California there was a family with a patriarch by the name of Jos Joaqun Moraga, whose son Gabriel gave the name of San Joaqun to one of the rivers of the state. From this name came the San Joaqun County, the town San Joaqun, and the San Joaqun Valley.

Joaquin means established by God and is the Spanish version of the German name Joachim. A biblical name, Joaquin is also a saint considered the Marys father. Even if people sometimes mispronounce it, Joaquin still makes a great choice if you want a sophisticated alternative to Jos or Juan.
