CHARACTERISTICS OF FALLOW DEER They were originally found in the Mediterranean region of Europe and Asia Minor. Fallow deer have since been introduced to many European countries, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Typical characteristics of fallow deer are: long tail, white spots and a prominent Adams apple.
Fallow deer are very adaptable to most conditions, except for those found in very high mountain regions. In BC, there are about 19 fallow deer farms that have approximately 831 animals. These animals are found throughout the province, with a higher concentration in the Thompson-Okanagan region.
The Province of British Columbia is home to three types of deer: mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), black-tailed deer (also Odocoileus hemionus ) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
Fun Facts: Fallow deer are agile and fast runners, capable of leaping great distances to escape predators. They are social animals, often forming herds led by a dominant buck during the mating season. These deer were historically introduced to many regions as a game species by royalty and aristocrats.
