To become a state trooper, one typically completes an associates degree in a field related to criminology, completes the state trooper training academy and passes examinations for physical and mental health.
Certain issues will immediately disqualify you from becoming a Michigan State Trooper, regardless of your education, experience or physical fitness. These disqualifiers reflect the Michigan State Polices (MSP) high standards for integrity, responsibility and public trust and include: Felony conviction at any time.
Training: Michigan State Police troopers are full-service police officers with enforcement authority throughout the entire state. All troopers complete our residential training academy in Lansing, Michigan where they receive nearly 1,200 hours of hands-on, lecture, and scenario-based instruction in: Firearms.

How long is trooper recruit school? Most recruit schools are a 20-22 week residential program. Recruits are required to live at the MSP Training Academy Sunday through Friday.
