All three are properly termed Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. The unit to which one is currently assigned is worn on the left shoulder, while any unit to which the soldier was assigned to while in combat may be worn on the right shoulder.
Those soldiers who are combat veterans are authorized permanent wear of the SSI of the unit they fought with on their right shoulder. This shoulder sleeve insignia recognizes former wartime service and is frequently called a combat patch.
The tradition of using patches to signify a Soldiers unit and rank evolved over the following two centuries and became prevalent in World War II. As Soldiers shifted from unit to unit, they would move the insignia of their old unit to signify they were combat veterans and to remember their fallen service members.
Known colloquially as the combat patching ceremony, this signifies the Soldiers service in a combat zone and forever links that Soldier and their service to the history of the unit.
This patch was officially adopted by the U.S. Army on October 19, 1918. The first patches were often primitive but by World War II, the manufacture was regulated. By World War II, all army groups, field armies, corps, and divisions, as well as all major Army commands, had unique SSI.

In the U.S. patches were first worn in war by the Union Army in the American Civil War as a way to quickly see which division the soldier belonged to. These early military patches were little more than a square of colored cloth sewn onto the hat or shirt.
