Bereavement Leave is a paid leave policy granted by the employer in the situation where an employee loses his/her family member, relative, spouse, children, sibling, or any other relationship. This leave is facilitated so that the employee can deal with the state of intense grief caused due to the loss of a loved one.
On September 11, 2023, the Northwest ISD Board of Trustees approved an update to local policy, DEC(LOCAL), that grants three days of paid leave for the death of an immediate family member. These three days are provided for each situation in which an immediate family member dies.
A bereavement policy describes your companys practices for allowing paid and unpaid time off when a family member, relative, or friend dies. SHRM reports that 88% of companies offer bereavement policies. Three to five days off is standard but there are no federal laws that mandate an employer offer bereavement leave.
Employees who are under the Canada Labour Code are in fact entitled up to three days paid bereavement leave in Canada after 3 consecutive months of employment.
Basic rules. Employees are eligible for bereavement leave if they have been employed at least 90 days with the same employer. Employees are entitled to 3 days of bereavement leave per calendar year, not per incident of bereavement. Eligible employees can take time off work without risk of losing their job.
