Organized urine sediment consists of biological elements such as leukocytes, erythrocytes, epithelial cells, casts, bacteria, fungi, parasites and sperm. Unorganized urine sediment contains crystals of various salts, for instance oxalate, phosphate, urate, and amorphous salts.
Healthy urine may contain invisible amounts of sediment. These include traces of tissue, protein, skin cells, etc. Urine sediment becomes a matter of concern if there is a presence of excess sediments and a high concentration of specific cells and crystals.
Microscopic examination/urine sediment. WBCs, RBCs, epithelial cells, and, rarely, tumor cells are the cellular elements found in the urinary sediment. The number of WBCs considered normal is typically 2-5 WBCs/hpf or less. A high number of WBCs indicates infection, inflammation, or contamination.
