Preparing an SDS Manufacturers and importers of hazardous chemicals have duties under the WHS Regulation (Section 330) to provide current information about the hazardous chemical in the form of an SDS.
The purpose of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), is to provide information on the hazards of working with a chemical and procedures that should be used to ensure safety.
Who can write an SDS? In theory, anyone can write an SDS as long as they are capable of filling out the OSHA-required elements outlined in Appendix D of the Hazard Communication Standard. Whether you have the expertise it takes to produce an accurate and complete sheet is another matter.
The SDS preparers may also include additional information in various section(s). Hazard Communication Standard: Safety Data Sheets. Section 1: Identification. Section 2: Hazard(s) Identification. Section 3: Composition/Information on Ingredients. Section 4: First-Aid Measures. Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures.
The HCS requires employers to keep an updated Safety Data Sheet for every hazardous chemical used or stored in the facility, regardless of the frequency or amount of chemical used. Administrators can request additional copies of SDSs from chemical manufacturers at any time.
