Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services CMS has developed the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to assign unique identifiers to health care providers. The National Provider Indentifier (NPI) has been the standard identifier for all HIPAA-covered entities (health care providers) since May 23, 2007.
The PECOS system is a database of providers who have registered with CMS. A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is necessary to register in PECOS. Use that identifier to search for the provider in the database. If you dont know the providers NPI number, you can search for their information in the NPI registry.
It is crucial to remember that any attending physician in the community must be enrolled in PECOS. This requirement applies to physicians, but Nurse Practitioners and PAs are excluded. Additionally, all Hospice Physicians who can docHub a patient must either be enrolled in PECOS or have opted out.
If you are an individual practitioner, update your user account via the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). If you are an organization user, once you have logged into Internet-based PECOS, click the Account Management button and select the update user account information option.
