Fire watch is an actual job in which you need to plan how to prevent fires in a workplace, monitor all work done there, and contact the fire department in case of a fire. Fire watch is very important, especially for workplaces that have combustible materials or employees that work with fire in some form or another.
Persons assigned to Fire Watch duties shall follow the requirements listed on the Fire Watch Duties sheet and shall patrol all unprotected areas of the building every hour to check for signs of fire or smoke conditions. All patrols are to be recorded on this Fire Watch Log Sheet immediately following each round.
FIRE WATCH LOG Log entries shall be made hourly at the completion of each round. Log entries shall consist of the date, the time the round was completed, a summary of what was observed, and the name and signature of the individual conducting the watch.
A fire watch is a person assigned to observe an area to ensure there are no hazards or fire, while the fire system is down. A fire watch must be performed while the building is occupied. In commercial buildings, a fire watch must be conducted even if there is only one person in the building.
According to 1910.252(a)(2)(iii)(B), a fire watch must be maintained for at least a half hour after completion of welding or cutting operations to detect and extinguish possible smoldering fires. However, this is the minimum time frame, and many employers maintain a fire watch for one hour.
