Basically, the IBEW is an organization of workers with common concerns and aspirations. One of the goals of the organization is to cultivate feelings of friendship among those in our industry. This means the IBEWs goal is to maintain a friendly but firm relationship with employers employing IBEW members.
The IBEW aptitude test is widely seen as tough, especially the math part. Heres what makes it challenging: The math section includes complicated algebra topics like equations, functions, polynomials, and advanced sequences. The level of algebra is tough and goes beyond what is usually taught in high school.
On average, only around the top 45% of IBEW applicants who take the entrance exam get selected for apprenticeships. This process is highly competitive due to the limited number of available openings within the program.
The process is very competitive. The instructors told us that at least 1200 - 1300 people had applied during my application cycle (the number of applicants was likely even higher). Meanwhile, IBEW 134 normally only accepts up to 100 people per class cycle, so there are many people competing for a few spots.
You may bring an application portfolio to your interview. Suggested items: cover letter, resume, letters of recommendation, industry certifications, military documents, and photos of projects. The tabs to the right will give you some suggestions on how to prepare a competitive portfolio.
