Originally, TRIO started as part of the War on Poverty, a movement started by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. The first program to be formed under TRIO back then was Upward Bound.
The federally funded TRIO program encompasses Upward Bound, McNair Scholars,Preparatory Enrollment Program (PEP) and Student Support Services (SSS) Regular and SSS STEM.
TRIO referred to the three programs: Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Service, which existed within this reauthorization of The Higher Education Act, and was designed to assist eligible students to begin and complete a post-secondary education.
Upward Bound gives students an opportunity to learn first-hand what college life is all about and helps the student to develop those skills necessary to succeed in college.
To be in compliance with Rhode Island Colleges policy on good academic standing, you are required to maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.0 each semester. Academic probation occurs the semester after an academic alert (not achieving a minimum cumulative and/or semester GPA of 2.0).
