Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide, is the most widely used insecticide in the U.S. It is used both in agriculture and for pest control in houses and other buildings. Americans are widely exposed to chlorpyrifos. Typical diets, particularly those of children, contain significant chlorpyrifos residues.
Several types of pesticide application equipment are used, including liquid pumps (manual and power operated), liquid atomizers (hydraulic energy, gaseous energy, and centrifugal energy), dry application, and soil application (liquid injection application).
There are many formulations for various pesticides but the most common formulations used in agriculture, home and garden, and structural pest control are sprays, granules, fumigants and baits. Products that are intended to be applied as sprays can come in a variety of formulations [Table 1].
Pesticides are formulated (prepared) in liquid, solid and gaseous forms. Liquid formulations include suspensions (flowables), solutions, emulsifiable concentrates, microencapsulated suspensions, and aerosols.
Applicators who want to apply pesticides (regardless of classification) to plants, trees, shrubs, grass or other horticultural plants for hire must be licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
