Liquefying natural gas makes it feasible to transport gas economically across oceans or in a few applications by truck to small scattered consumers. LNG occupies 600 times less space than the gas, but must be kept at temperatures below 160 degrees celsius and be pressurised.
Currently, LNG may only be transported via rail in a portable tank with an approval from FRA. However, the HMR does authorize the DOT 113 specification tank car for other flammable cryogenic liquids. It is specifically designed for the transportation of refrigerated liquefied gases.
LNG requires 600 times less space while kept at -160C and near atmospheric pressure compared to an equivalent volume of natural gas in its gaseous state, making it much more cost effective to transport in ships (LNG carriers) over long distances by sea.
LNG export facilities receive natural gas by pipeline and liquefy the gas for transport on special ocean-going LNG ships, or tankers. Most LNG is transported by tankers called LNG carriers in large, onboard, super-cooled (cryogenic) tanks.
Always transport your gas cylinders in an open or well-ventilated vehicle! You are carrying safety data sheets (SDS) for the gas in transit. It is also important to know what gas you are carrying and that you are trained in potential hazards and appropriate emergency procedures.

Pipelines are the safest way to transport natural gas. The transportation system for natural gas consists of a complex network of pipelines, designed to quickly and efficiently transport natural gas from its origin to where its needed.
The liquefied form is not transported by pipeline but by truck or rail in specifically built containers or in vessels built specifically to carry the cargo. Once it docHubes its end destination, the LNG is reheated and converted back into a gaseous state for use.
