The California Classified School Employee of the Year Program highlights the efforts of classified employees who contribute to a positive school environment and have gone above and beyond what was expected of them.
Classified employee is applied to employees who are not required to hold a certificate or a letter of authorization as a prerequisite to obtain or keep their job.
The program was established to recruit classified school employees who have completed their community college coursework; it helps support them in earning their bachelors degree and a teaching credential through grants of $4,000 per year per candidate.
Under the California Education Code, teachers have the primary responsibility of supervising students on their way to and from school, on the playground, and during recess. This means that non-certificated school employees cannot be assigned supervision duties in the absence of a certificated teacher.
The Classified School Employee Summer Assistance Program (CSESAP) provides up to a dollar for dollar match on amounts withheld from a participating local educational agencys (LEAs) classified school employees monthly paychecks during the 2024-25 school year.

Classified staff are employees of a school, district, or county office of education who are in a position not requiring certification. Classified staff include paraprofessionals, office/clerical staff, as well as other classified staff, such as custodians, bus drivers, and business managers.
Classified employees are assigned to positions within the occupational families listed in the Commonwealths Compensation Plan. These employees are covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act (Title 2.2, 2.2 -2900 of the Code of Virginia), once they have completed the probationary period.
