Pole climbers shall be inspected as required in this paragraph (g)(3) before each days use and a gaff cut-out test performed at least weekly when in use.
Pole climbing is ascending a pole which one can grip with their hands. The related activity of mast climbing describes ascending an object similar to a pole, but having a larger diameter which excludes gripping with the hands.
The pole shall be struck with a series of sharp, but moderate blows with the hammer, listening for a good ringing sound as the hammer strikes the poles indicating solid timber. Sounding should commence at ground level and continue around the circumference at not more than 25mm spacing.
Performing a sounding test is the only sure way to determine the condition of the pole prior to the climb. Before you begin your pole ascent, perform a visual inspection to locate the high side of the pole and inspect it for nails, knots, and deep splits (s).
Keep your shoulders and hips in a relaxed position. Remember, 8 to 10 inch steps, hand foot coordination, and keep one knee locked at all times. Each time you take a step up, lock the knee of the leg with which you just stepped up. Use your legs to lift your body during climbing and use your hands for balance only.

Inspect pole and tree climbers to ensure that: Gaffs are at least as long as the manufacturers recommended minimums (generally 32 and 51 millimeters (1.25 and 2.0 inches) for pole and tree climbers, respectively, measured on the underside of the gaff);
A pole climbing apparatus has a frame carrying two pairs of fixed rollers that are vertically spaced and arranged in a V configuration to engage one side of a pole. A movable roller engages the opposite side of the pole and is biased against the pole by a pneumatic cylinder.
