Essex Police can provide a vetting clearance level for the following levels; Non-Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV) level 1, NPPV2, NPPV2 Abbreviated, NPPV3, Recruitment Vetting (RV) and Management Vetting (MV). The level of access to both assets and data determines which level is required.
Once a vetting file has been started, provided the vetting forms have been completed fully and accurately, vetting checks may be completed within a few days. However, where checks have to be completed in other police force areas, agencies or in other countries, there can be a delay of several weeks or months.
The checks we conduct look for any previous behaviour on behalf of the applicant or their family which may present a risk to the Force. We look at previous arrests, investigations, cautions, convictions, penalty notices, intelligence reports, motoring offences and open source material.
If following interview you are the preferred candidate you will be required to complete our National Vetting Form for police staff. Full disclosure is essential and vetting is undertaken by the Vetting Unit. This will include financial history checks. This process can on occasion take up to several weeks.
These may vary between employers, but the most general vetting steps include: Initial candidate screening. Phone and video screening. In-person or video interviewing. Background checks. Reference checks.

On average it takes between 12 16 weeks however this is dependent on individuals vetting requirements and other delays that are outwith our control.
The NPPV exists because the police cannot impartially vet their employees the same way they do for DBS checks. As you can imagine, this process isnt going to be as lenient as a regular DBS check, and in fact the process is even more strict than an Enhanced DBS check.
How long does vetting take? Vetting can take four weeks or longer, but this depends on the level of vetting required and can vary dependent on the role. National Security Vetting (NSV) will take longer. What background checks take place during vetting?
