Georgia has two types of motor vehicle property taxes: TAVT Applies to most vehicles purchased March 1, 2013 or later, with a few exceptions. Annual Ad Valorem Tax Applies to most vehicles purchased prior to March 1, 2013 and non-titled vehicles.
Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) became effective March 1, 2013 after the Georgia General Assembly passed HB386 in the 2012 Legislative Session. TAVT is a one-time, per owner tax that is collected at the time the vehicle is titled.
These exempt properties generally include property owned by nonprofit entities, religious organizations, and governments. Also, some states and local governments will give exemptions for certain groups. For example, if a homestead exemption exists, a property owner will not pay taxes on their primary home.
We offer exemptions to TAVT and Registration renewals for qualifying active duty service members. If you are in the military, active duty and stationed in Georgia, you may request exemption from TAVT using a Military Annual Ad Valorem Tax Exemption (PT-471) form and certification from your Commanding Officer.
