What do I need to open an NSI account?

Youll need to complete a registration form and send it to us first. This is because we need someone to witness your signature as proof of identity. Once we have this, youll be able to manage your accounts online (except for Investment Account, which can only be managed by post).

How long does a bank transfer to NSI take?

In most cases the money will leave your bank account straight away, and it can take up to two hours to reach your NSI account. It can sometimes take longer to leave your bank account, for example if your bank needs to make extra checks. For your peace of mind, well email or text you when we receive your payment.

What are the disadvantages of an NSI savings account?

Some NSI products might charge penalties if you cash out early for some investment products, meaning you may get less back than your original investment. Unlike most UK banks, the NSI is for savings only. This means it doesnt lend money. For example, you cant take out a mortgage or a credit card.

How do I get into my NSI account online?

You need your NSI number to be able to log into your NSI account online. It will be 11 digits long and starts with an 11, 21, 31 or 41. Youll find your NSI number on any letter youve had from us since you registered for our online banking service.

Can I access NSI from abroad?

Yes, you can, but its not that simple. As the National Savings Investments (NSI) website explains, while they do have some customers outside the UK, you need a UK bank or building society account. It can only make payments to, or receive payments from, a UK account.

How long does an NSI application take?

After you apply, well contact you if we need any more information or documents. We aim to confirm any accounts or investments within a month of the date we receive your application. But it might take longer at busy times, so please bear with us.
