Utahs Circuit Breaker/Renter Refund program provides general relief for high property taxes to qualifying senior citizens or surviving spouse who have income below mandated levels. The renter refund applies to both renters and manufactured homeowners who rent lots. The maximum credit for renters is $1,312.
You are either: a. at least 66 years of age, or b. an unmarried surviving spouse, regardless of age. You must be able to prove Utah residency and household income to qualify.
Circuit breakers are offered to renters and homeowners in 16 states, only home owners in 1 state and only renters in 1 state; in 8 states the programs are limited to only the elderly or disabled and in all 18 states there is a maximum income level after which a taxpayer no longer qualifies for a refund.
The applicant must be 66 years of age as of December 31st of the year for which they are applying. A widow or widower of any age may qualify. The applicant must furnish their own financial support for the year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return.
